Like so many others, I had a bit of a notion to write a post about the inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States on January 20, 2009. However, after thinking about it for awhile, I decided that it probably wasn’t quite as good of an idea as it had originally seemed.
At first, I hadn’t intended on posting about the inauguration, in fact, I hadn’t even considered it. However, after arriving home during a lunch break on Tuesday, I turned on the TV and found coverage of the day’s events being beamed into my living room. Since I didn’t really have anything I was planning on watching other than cleaning out re-runs off my DVR, I left it on the inauguration coverage. Barack was speaking when I turned on my TV and after a few minutes I began to wonder what the day’s schedule was and where in the program they were.
A brief search on Google later and I figured out that he was giving his post-oath speech and what I was watching was his Inaugural Address. However, since my DVR was on that channel before I got home, I could rewind up to an hour and was able to go back far enough to watch the swearing-in.
After watching that portion of the program, I went back to the live coverage. While watching the live coverage, I was still thinking about the way that the oath did not go quite as flawlessly as intended and found this YouTube clip where I could watch it again. Since it was a bit of an anomaly (the mistakes, not the oath) I was tentatively planning on embedding it in a post and talking about the it but was having some second thoughts.
The first reason that I deemed it to be a less-than-stellar idea was because of the fact that the information has already been spread so far throughout the internet that anyone who would be interested in watching it will have likely found other sources for it long before finding my site. Especially because this post goes live at 9:00 AM Central Time on January 21, 2009 and the inauguration will be old news by this time. This is also true for search engine traffic because the video itself would likely be found ranking far above my site for the associated search terms.
Later on, when I found this post from the Anderson Cooper 360 Blog, I realized that the mistakes were not as big of a deal as I was making them out to be in my head and the post I was thinking about was not worth writing in the first place.
My other thought for a post, was to talk about Obama’s speech. This idea came to me when I first noticed the Full Text Of President Obama’s Inauguration Speech in my RSS reader, but that idea was later diluted when I received it several more times from other news feeds and was ultimately killed when I received a link to watch the address in my RSS reader. No, that isn’t the version that I received in my reader, but it was one that was much easier to embed on my site.
For those individuals who do still want to read about the inauguration and find out more, I’m sure I wouldn’t be able to provide the information thy are seeking, especially considering that I wasn’t there. While I still post the obligatory “Happy New Year” and “Happy Fourth of July” and other similar posts, I can generally put a bit more of a personal touch on them and perhaps include a video or picture of my own creation to make it interesting. Since I wasn’t in Washington DC for this event and only caught parts of it through the internet and TV, I decided that a post about the inauguration would not be in my best interest or the best interest of this site as it would end up being mostly a regurgitation of stuff that others have already written and published online. So, even though the United States of America has a new president and it is an important occasion that everyone should be aware of and recognize, I’m not going to be posting about it. I hope you all don’t mind.

thanks for not posting about it, i appreciate it. :p
lol, no problem
It just cracks me up that you posted about something that you dont want to talk about! haha!
haha..yeah, kinda but really I was talking about not talking about it (which I know was, in itself, talking about it)
what a paradox! ahhhh!!!
Kinda got a kick out of it too.
Glad you enjoyed it
That’s okay, because I did write about it, but not quite what one might think. I didn’t chronicle the day; I chronicled how I felt about it all. Then again, you see my picture, so it would figure that I would.
