When many people think about ham radio, they think of something done mainly by “old guys” and that they would not fit in to the group of people who are involved in the hobby and therefore would have nobody that they would want to talk to. The reality is that there are a wide variety of demographics represented throughout the hobby.

I have talked to people as young as 9 and as old as 79 on the radio. While it is true that the majority of hams are male, there are also quite a few females on the airwaves as well.

One thing to keep in mind about the ham radio hobby is that it doesn’t matter who you are, how young (or old) you are, or which gender you belong to. If there is someone who is interested in ham radio, anyone who is already involved will be more than happy to help you get started. All you need to do is ask.

Ham radio is for everyone no matter who you are. Don’t worry about who you will talk to. When you get on the radio, you will find people to talk to. There will be people like you on a radio someplace else in the world that will be happy to talk to you.
