One of the most common ways that is suggested for people to save money and spend less is to eat out less often. This is generally a good idea, but most people do not realize the effect that eating out can have on their budgets. This has the greatest effect in terms of fast food.
People are quick to realize the impact of eating a $20.00 steak at a steakhouse on a regular basis, but when it comes to fast food, people do not always realize how quickly the five dollars here and six dollars there can add up.
My suggestion (and personal rule) is to only pay with cash when buying fast food. While this does not seem like a very big deal, it is staggering the number of people who use debit and credit cards at places like McDonald’s and Burger King. Even when they use a debit card and the argument that the money is coming out of their checking account, the impact is not felt as strongly as when paying with cash.
Most people generally carry a given amount of cash on any given day. If you are a person who buys fast food with plastic, try switching to using only cash for it. You will be a lot quicker to realize the impact that fast food can have on your budget.
