In my mind, I am kicking around some additional website ideas. I don’t want to say too much because I haven’t gone ahead and purchased the domain names yet. However, in thinking about these sites, I realize that they are much more focused niche-wise than this one.
Also, because I discuss most of my main interests here, there would be a fair amount of overlap in content between this and those other sites. For example, one of the sites I have in mind would be completely dedicated to ham radio and another would fall under the personal finance niche.
If I were to launch these sites it would probably be beneficial to my internet empire as they would be much more targeted towards specific visitors and whatnot. One criticism I receive on a consistent basis when it comes to reviews of this site is that it is not focused enough and covers too many different topics. By launching these separate sites, I would solve this problem and put the separate topics on different sites.
One thing that I think of though, is what that would do to and mean for romandock dot com as it is my first real website and I really have grown attached to it. Also, to many of you, my name is synonymous with this website. I think that, for now anyway, I see the future of this website to be a place to discuss my random thoughts and that nearly all of the posts would fall under Ramblings rather than the other categories I have set up. It would basically be my own version of J2FI and I would cut my targeted post amount from two per day to one per day.
Another thing to consider, however, would be whether to leave all of my old posts under the other categories here, or to move them to the new site, or have them both places. I’m not sure what I should/would do about that. Oh well, I’m not going to do anything yet but am just thinking about the future. I’m pretty sure though that I won’t ever sell or get rid of this site. Anyway, just some thoughts.

Focusing your site to a specific audience can certainly help attract regular visitors, as they’re more inclined to subscribe to the rss feed if they think they’ll be regular content appealing to their specific interest.
Having a single blog that has posts covering a wide variety of topics can put people off, as the signal-to-noise ratio can be too low.
Be wary of having the same content on multiple websites, as google can penalise you for it. You’re probably better off moving appropriate content to the new site(s), and implement some redirects on this site, to redirect any visitors looking for those old posts straight to your new site.
It would basically be my own version of J2FI”
I’m not sure if that was a dis, or a compliment
I agree with Martin that you shouldn’t use word-for-word copies of your posts. At the same time, you should be careful not to use the exact same meta tags if you’re going to post on the topic. Google pays attention to host IPs as well as meta tags when determining if something is a duplicate.
Aside from that, you should be good to go for your projects. Good luck with them, and let me know so we can do some link exchanges
I wouldn’t duplicate content across sites, regardless of any potential Google penalties. Maybe you could add a link to the relevant posts, directing visitors to the new site for more information?
@Martin - That is a very good point on RSS subscriptions, I’ve never really thought of it that way, but I can see how people wouldn’t want to subscribe to a site that doesn’t always have information that they are interested in.
@Jason - It was a compliment (as well as some link love
) so just relax! Oh, and keeping in mind my response to Martin, you need to not get too focused on Japanese politics
@DCR - I think duplicating the content would certainly be a bad idea, but I’m not sure whether they should be moved (risking broken links throughout the interweb) or left here. If I move them I could remove the categories completely which would help clean up the site a bit.
Yeah Google will penalize you for duplicate content thats why I’m waiting for my hosting on my other domain to expire by itself rather than leaving that site on there. I think we would like to see you pursue other projects as well but keep RomanDock alive!
In your case, couldn’t you move the content over, remove it from the old site, and implement a redirect for any traffic from there to go to the new site?
Well by this time, you’re probably getting some decent search engine traffic. Why not post up a bunch of adsense on the old posts that are getting the most search traffic.
I realize this in no way really addresses what you’ve written, but it’s a thought.
