I have come to realize that there are three basic categories of posts. The first category are those posts which are part of a series of posts. Examples of this would be my Choosing a Power Supply series or the series I did on Trimming back your entertainment budget without trimming back your entertainment. There are many other examples of this. Ms Danielle’s “Flashback Fridays” and “Binky’s Corner” (which we haven’t seen for awhile, I wonder how Binky is doing) could also be considered examples of a series.

Beyond that, there are posts that I would consider random quality content. These posts are generally not expected or part of a series but happen to be relevant to the topic of the site and contain useful information and are valuable to the readers. There are many examples of this throughout the blogosphere and these are the posts that most people generally think to write.

The third type of posts are those that I would consider filler posts. These are the posts that are often off-topic and may have an embedded YouTube video or other amusing anecdote. They provide good entertainment value, sometimes help your audience relate to you, and give you something to post when you can’t think of anything else.

Pretty much any post I have written can be put into one of these three categories as can almost any post that anyone else has written as well. The thing that we have to remember is to keep a good balance between these three different categories. If the site consists entirely of random quality content, it would be a useful blog and have a lot of good information but it would be less likely that the readers will easily relate to the author. If the site consists entirely of filler posts it might be entertaining for awhile, but will not be a priority for people to read and/or add to their feed reader.
