Ok, it’s been far to long and the time has come. I have made reference to this several times, but am just now officially launching my new site: Find Low Book Prices.
I tell a bit of a version of this story on the site’s about page, but will share it with you all here as well. Around the beginning of this semester, I was looking online to find out how much money I could save by purchasing some of my textbooks online. As I was doing this, I had multiple windows open (one for each of a variety of different websites that sell books) and was entering the information for each book in each window. It was getting quite repetitive and annoying and I decided that there must be a better way to compare prices and decide where to purchase books from.
Thus, the idea came to me of a very simple, streamlined site without a lot of frills and/or extras where a user would be able to type in information about a book (the original idea was to just be able to search by ISBN) and be returned the cost of that book at various places such as Amazon.com, EBay, etc.
Well, as I began putting that site together, it seemed to keep growing and what I originally intended to be a small simple site now contains 34 PHP files and 2,533 lines of code. It doesn’t seem like much when I look at those numbers, but it sure took quite a bit of time to put it all together and make all of the parts work with each other. In retrospect, this was a great project because along with increasing my knowledge of PHP and CSS, I also learned about API’s and XML (both which I was basically scared of before) and creating/using cookies.
At any rate, I’m fairly happy with how it turned out and hope that all of you fine readers will help me promote my new site and get some traffic to it. If you would be interested in helping me promote this site, check out the Promote page where you can print off posters and business cards as well as retrieve the code to include the 125×125 banner on your site. Also, I have included some social media interaction on the site via Twitter and Facebook. Making use of the three social media buttons that I have included is also much appreciated.
Finally, I would like to thank everyone who assisted by giving me feedback during my pre-release party because I do feel that many of the suggestions that I received were quite helpful and that the site is much better because of it. If the site is not any better, at least I feel better about it and have more confidence in it.

Congratulations on your new web-business. I am a little confused how you will make money. Besides that, People can get a far longer listing of new and used books via isbn on Amazon.
Well, all of the links to products on the results page are affiliate links.
In regards to listings of new and used books on Amazon, I link directly to those listings as well and show the prices those listings start at. This will give viewers an opportunity to determine if they would be able to get a better deal through Amazon, Ebay, or one of the other sites I have listed.
Right, but for example I put my kids’ book in there and it gave me a link to Amazon only with no used book offers etc. My question is: why would anyone use your site instead of Amazon itself? Just trying to see the big picture here. It seems to be like: “Hey book buyer, come to my site so I can send you to Amazon.” I also love books and hope you can make some money at it. Good luck dude.
Don’t get me wrong, I value your feedback, but I am NOT just sending to people to Amazon, but in fact helping them compare across several sites before deciding to go to Amazon.
Take for example this search result, which is for a textbook I am using this semester.
If I were in the market to purchase book (like I was at the beginning of the semester) I could go to Amazon, Ebay, Half.com, etc to see where I should purchase the book (which I had to do), or come to Find Low Book Prices and find out the following:
Amazon Price: $56.40
New in Amazon Marketplace: $39.94
Used in Amazon Marketplace: $26.25
Ebay: $24.99
Half.com: Starting $41.00 brand new
Alibris: $26.95 and up from there
Abebooks: $26.55 and up
From this information, I can then decide whether I want to purchase via Amazon, EBay, or one of the other sites. At this time, I am guessing that people will be most likely to use either Amazon, Ebay, or Half because those are places they are familiar and comfortable shopping at, but in the future, I hope to add a few additional sites as well that people may want to shop at.
I hope that clears it up and better explains the intent of this site…by the way, what is the ISBN of the book that you had typed in? I would be interested to see if perhaps none of the other sites besides Amazon had a listing for it, which could lead to some confusion.
Good to see your website has now gone live!
I definitely see it as being useful. I regularly use similar sites for finding the best price for technology gadgets/items (such as staticice.com.au for Australian prices), and now this site will allow me to do the same thing for books, and will save me having to manually search amazon / ebay / etc for the best price.
That is an awesome resource and overall a great idea. I like how you incorporated Amazon, Ebay, and Half. I did a couple searches for some of my old books and found some good prices.
Congrats for new online ventures and our best wishes to rock in new business, lots of book readers available in world wide, i m sure “Find Low Book Prices” will going to be hit.
I did a search on Robert Heinlein, my favorite author, and while it came up with a whole lot of books he has written it didn’t show any prices. Did I do something wrong?
No, you just need to select a specific one. From there it will give you more information about it (including cover art) as well as the prices.
Now, that makes a whole lot of sense. Thanks Nick.
Our best wishes with yours for new Starting. sure you having success because you started very interesting vetures.
I like how you keep the design really basic, and easy to navigate. Really enjoyed checking it out, congrats!
I’m surprised you did not put the “Beta” tag on FLBP. LOL
The concept behind the project is great. I would love to recommend it to friends. I forgot the name of this social networking site for people who love to read but I’m sure you’ll find people in there who would love what your site has to offer.
P.S.
Not hating but FLBP can look better.
Got it! It’s Shelfari..
