Almost as if in response to my article about cheap laptops, the people behind the One Laptop Per Child Foundation have announced that the computers they are sending to developing countries will in fact be available in the United States. This information was reported yesterday by Reuters.

An interesting thing to note is that while the prices for these laptops are under $250 for the people in the developing countries, the non-profit organization is going to make some money off the sale of these machines in the United States. The current projected price is $350 which is said to be approximately twice what it costs to make them.

Either way, these laptops may be worth checking out. They are low priced, run Linux, waterproof, and feature a display that it has been said can be easily viewed in direct sunlight. There are many other features that make this laptop seem like it might be worth checking out.

From what i have seen at the website for One Laptop Per Child, this is definitely not a top of the line machine, but for the price it has some pretty interesting features. It could be a low cost solution to drag around and not worry about too much.
