A recent InfoWorld article highlights that Intel has actually joined AMD in supporting a cause. The cause is to provide young people in developing countries with laptop computers. Even though this is a noble cause and can really help these developing countries, which in a roundabout way helps the US and world economies, it is interesting to note that these computers that are being shipped to these countries are not available for purchase in the USA or many other “developed” countries.
Both of these companies are making computers that are being sent to developing countries. The AMD machine is a laptop that is priced around $175 and the Intel machine is also a laptop that is currently around $225 but expected to drop to around $200 by the end of the year.
Don’t get too excited though, for whatever reason, they are not selling these machines domestically or in developed countries. As far as I can tell, the only way to get one of these laptops is to be in one of the developing nations. It seems like the companies would only benefit from making these low cost laptops readily available.
I think there are a very large number of people who would purchase one of these low cost laptops, even if they were not top of the line machines. People would buy these computers to have as a spare or a computer to haul around day-to-day and be really rough with. There are many cases when a person might want to bring a laptop along, just not the one they spent $1,200 on. A low cost solution such as one of these $175 - $225 computers would be a good option to have available.
