I need to go through my feeds and unsubscribe from some of them to reduce the volume... However, google reader has keyboard shortcuts (hit "?" in google reader to see them) that can be used to quickly navigate through posts. I prioritise the feeds, and will quickly skim through the lower-priority feeds, and only read the posts that look particularly interesting. For other feeds, I'll skim through the posts a little more slowly, taking the time to read most of the posts. With the google reader keyboard shortcuts, I find I can navigate through a lot of posts in a relatively short time, and when I encounter a post that looks interesting, I'll open it in another tab in my browser (ctrl-click in Firefox), and then read it once I've finished skimming through all the pending posts for that feed. (Because I like the keyboard shortcuts in google reader, I added <a href="http://martybugs.net/blog/blog.cgi/website/gallery/GalleryKeyboardShortcuts.html" rel="nofollow">keyboard shortcuts</a> to my photo gallery, to make it easier to navigate through it.)
