There are many factors that can affect the amount of money you are able to make from a blog or website. Some of these factors include the number of readers you have, amount of advertising on the page, types of advertising, ad placement, number of different methods of monetization you use, etc. There is, however, one factor that is often times overlooked. Most people fail to point out the effect your choice of niche can have on your ability to make money.
Choosing a niche for a blog is a very important step. There are many articles available that talk about the importance of choosing a niche for your blog, but I don’t recall seeing the effects this can have on your monetization mentioned anywhere.
Besides the obvious fact that if your blog focuses on Camping at Wal-Mart or $600 Laundry Bills, you will have a hard time getting loyal readers, there is also the issue of finding advertisers who want to put their name on your site. There is no shortage of ads for sites that target keywords like Make Money Online or Free Porn, but many other niche blogs might have problems finding sponsors.
I have noticed this through the monetization of this site. The only way to add Ham Radio as a keyword to most of the ad servers is to choose “other†and type it in. Perhaps I should contact Burghardt’s, AES, and HRO and see if I can do some direct sales.
Has anyone else had any issues like this in monetizing their site?

At the end of the day, content drives your readership and then presenting value products to your readers drive your income.
Most bloggers prefer the easy way out and choose technology as a niche in itself. Its a broad spectrum but more blogs have a chance to succeed without much expertise
