I don’t recall what prompted me to think of this, but I recently realized that I hadn’t checked lately to see how fast I could type. In the past I remember being able to type somewhere between ninety and just over one-hundred words per minute, however, even though I type quite a bit on a regular basis, I generally don’t try to type as fast as I possibly can and don’t pay much attention to how fast I am typing. Also, I often type while doing other things such as watching TV or between bites of food.
Anyway, I decided to find out what my current typing speed is and located this site that has some typing tests that you can take for free online. The options that I used for the test were:
- 3 min.
- The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
- WPM
I took the test twice and had the following results:
Net Speed: 82 WPM
(words/minute)
Accuracy: 98%
Gross Speed: 83 WPM
(words/minute)
Net Speed: 85 WPM
(words/minute)
Accuracy: 94%
Gross Speed: 90 WPM
(words/minute)
While these results aren’t necessarily anything worth bragging about, and certainly nothing near the 120+ that Jason occasionally brags about, I don’t think this is too shabby.
Now, for the fun part…the challenge. Take the test and post your results in the comments, let’s see just how shabby my typing speed is or if it compares pretty closely with the rest of my fellow bloggers.
To spice things up and encourage some participation, anyone who posts their results in the comments before my server says that it is June 21, 2008 will be entered into a drawing. One lucky commenter will be given their choice of advertising (125×125, 468×60, or Text Link) for the month of July.

That’s pretty fast though.
I laugh at your puny score, mere mortal! BEHOLD my 138 and quiver with ENVY!!!
Seriously, though … 80+ puts you in a great spot to be a freelance writer. Being able to hammer out that much text consistently will allow you to pound through about 5,000 words each day in no time at all, which is often enough to justify quitting your day job to focus on self-employment.
There is only one other person that I’ve ever seen type 90+, so you’re high score is safe
If you’re interested in giving freelancing a go, check out ChrisBlogging.
Nice! That’s amazing that you can type that fast, thanks for the encouragement though and I’ve been to ChrisBlogging before, but never seriously considered freelance writing. Perhaps I’ll give it a go.
Thanks for participating in this fun little spur-of-the-moment challenge.
Using the same test settings as you did (3 min, wizard of oz, wpm), I got:
Net Speed: 86 WPM
(words/minute)
Accuracy: 96%
Gross Speed: 89 WPM
(words/minute)
Hey, not bad…least I know that there’s someone who types about the same speed as I do!
