For many readers, this post will not apply as you already have a router and you already know the benefits of it. However, many people do not have a router at home and do not understand how a router can benefit them.
A router is a fairly inexpensive piece of hardware that goes between your computer and your internet connection and can provide many benefits to you. Below is a list of five reasons you should have a router. This list demonstrates a few of the reasons that everyone should have a router.
1. Most routers on the market today also act as a firewall which helps protect you from hackers.
2. Having a router eliminates any need to install additional drivers or software on your computer that may otherwise be required by your modem.
3. If you have a router you can easily add another computer to your home because the router will likely have at least four ports for computers to plug in to.
4. Having a router with wireless capability will allow you to get or use a laptop with wireless access from anywhere in your home.
5. It’s easier to run a new (longer) network cable than coax or whatever type of transmission line your internet connection uses if you ever want to move your computer to a new location.

Nick, you’re absolutely correct that a router is really a “must-have” piece of equipment for your home computer.
There are a handful of people that I know that had their cable modem plugged directly into their machines and were not running any sort of firewall or AV on their machine. And they wondered why they were having so many problems!
Nice post!
