There are several ham radio applications that make use of the DTMF tones that most radios have. However, some radios do not have DTMF tones built in to them. Just because a radio is lacking this functionality does not mean that you cannot use it for those applications, you just need a workaround.

To make this work, the phone needs to be set to emit DTMF tones (some phones default to a voice mode where it will say the digit rather than emit the tone when a number is dialed) and it also should be set on speakerphone so that the sound will be louder and more easily picked up by the radio’s mic.
