In my post Devices I Bring With Me – Part 1, I mentioned only a couple of items that I actually bring with me because I only mentioned the couple of items that are hauled around in my actual luggage rather than in baggage meant for electronic gadgets and gizmos.
While I am keeping the bulk of the items for Part 3, this post has a few more pieces and an actual computer to mention.
As you can see my “messenger bag” style computer case houses little more than just the computer. Now, for a breakdown of the items within that messenger bag:
Laptop – This bag houses and transports my Toshiba Satellite A105-S2101 laptop. This computer runs Linux, more specifically Debian Etch. All aspects and features of this particular laptop and distribution work great together and I am quite happy with the way this setup is currently working.
Portable External Hard Drive – I have a SmartDisk FireLite Model USBFLB100 that I bring with me most of the time. This drive does not always live in this particular bag and will occasionally travel in my other “computer case” or in another backpack that I use for classes. It houses a variety of data as well as a bootable partition from which I can boot other computers into Debian rather than the default Windows operating system found in most computer labs.

USB Device Cable – This is a “run of the mill” device cable that works well for my FireLite as well as a variety of other USB devices that use the Mini-B style USB connector.
Charging/Data Cable for my Sansa MP3 Player.

When flying, which bag(s) do you take as hand luggage, and which ones do you check in?
I typically travel with a laptop and DSLR camera (and a few lenses). I refuse to check any of that in, as I’ve heard far too many stories of gear getting damaged and/or stolen…
Normally it’s fine, as most airlines will allow you to take a laptop bag plus a camera bag as hand luggage. However, on a recent trip to Tasmania, I was only allowed a single bag totalling 4kg as hand luggage!
Well, last time I flew I only had one laptop and used my green luggage (you can see it in Part 1) as a carry-on. I just slipped the laptop in that piece of luggage with my clothes so I didn’t have to check anything. I haven’t flown since I expanded the amount of stuff that I drag around and I am not sure what I would do if I were to fly now.
I suppose the important thing is to research what you can take as hand luggage, and then pack accordingly (ie, number of bags, and size and weight limits).
