A lot of the mobile radios that you can buy have the option to mount the faceplate separately from the body of the radio. This can be very advantageous because many newer vehicles are not necessarily radio friendly in the sense of having someplace logical to mount the radio. Now, the radio itself can be mounted under a seat, in the trunk, or just about anywhere within the vehicle and still be used by the driver.
However, if you choose to use a remote mounting setup like this, one thing you may want to keep in mind when finding a location for the radio is being able to access the radio body. For day-to-day operations this is not a huge concern, but when you begin to think about the different things that your radio is able to do and that you may want to do with your radio, it may be beneficial to be able to have easy access to the radio itself.
One example of this is if you would like to program your radio using computer software. Generally speaking, in order to do this, you will have to plug your computer in to a data port of some sort on the radio. Having easy access to the radio will make it easier to get to the data port or to remove the radio if you do not have a computer that you can bring to the vehicle.
