I must admit that so far, I haven’t been terribly good at backing up my site. However, due to the amount of content I have on it now and the amount of time I have put in to things such as theme customization and the like, it would be awful to have to start from scratch.
Because of this, I finally decided to come up with some sort of regular plan to back-up the site. However, I have decided that rather than just back up the database and theme files, I am going to keep a backup of the entire system. This will make it ultra easy to recover in the event that something goes horribly wrong or I tweak the wrong setting.
In order to do this, I looked around the internet and decided to use a program called Mondo that allows you to make an image of your entire system and put it on CD, DVD, or write it to another drive or computer.
The process for doing this is quite simple, the documentation is very straight forward, and it doesn’t take terribly long to do the back-up.
Now I just have to remember to run it on a regular basis (I’m thinking once per week should be a good interval) and I will always have a relatively recent image of my server should something bad happen.
With the restore functions of this program, you are presumably able to restore the entire system or just certain folders so if something minor goes wrong I will be able to restore just the parts that are broken or the entire system.
This utility is designed to be used with any system (not just a server) that is running Linux. If you are using Windows, I do not know of a version of this program that will work for you, but for a Linux user who wants to have a back-up, this may be just the thing.
