There is big news for AMD today has they have announced the eminent release of their newest processor which is said to be the most advanced x86 processor ever produced. It is also the first x86 quad-core processor.

While this is not likely to have a huge effect on the average consumer, it is big news for people who run servers and data centers because it means that they will be able to house more computer power within the confines of the space that they already have. There is also the cited benefit that this new processor will be able to do more not only faster, but with less power consumption than the options already available.

Aside from the benefits to the computing world, the tech-savvy investor may also want to do some research and compare this processor to some of the other options and determine whether the benefits are great enough that there will be a massive switch to these processors from the ones that are currently used, especially if there is sufficient evidence that people will be switching from Intel processors to these ones from AMD.

If the numbers look good and you like what you see on their investor relations page, this is a company whose stock you may want to consider investing in. News like this is the type of things that you want to watch for from a company to pick up a stock before the price jumps. If you wait until earnings reports and projections are released, you will be too late.

However, there is also the chance that this processor will not greatly impact the stock price or that the stock will see a price increase from this announcement and that the price will come back down to pre-announcement levels once the hype wears off.

This is not to be taken as a recommendation for the purchase of the stock, but an example of the types of things that you should be watching for that may foreshadow a good return on your investment.

If nothing else, it will be interesting to see what kind of effect (if any) this has on the computing world and how long it takes for this technology to make its way in to desktops and workstations.
